30-Second Fashion by Rebecca Arnold

My regular readers know how much I’m enjoying this series and 30-Second Fashion by Rebecca Arnold* is another book I loved. It contains 50 key modes, garments, and designers, each explained in half a minute. I read some biographies of designers before, such as Alexander McQueen – Blood beneath the skin by Andrew Wilson and Coco Chanel by Linda Simon, so I was keen on reading something on fashion. 30 Second is really great and I’ve enjoyed it a lot.

In the book there are all sorts of interesting details, like famous bloggers or details on what constitutes Haute Couture, which I have to say I had no idea about. I wish they would have spent a bit more on the damage fashion does to the environment, both in fast fashion and in the luxury market (e.g. fur), but, at the same time, it’s a short book on a topic which is so complex. Cotton is mentioned and so the sweatshops in Asia, so well done for that.

The book covers 7 topics: designers, themes and inspiration, cities, the fashion calendar, couture and high street, media, and street style. In each section there is a profile of well known people, such as Alexander McQueen and Anna Wintour. I highly recommend this book if you want to know more about fashion, as it would surely touch on topics or trends you are not familiar with.

  • Hi Anca,

I am not really a ‘dedicated follower of fashion’, as ‘The Kinks’ said in their song! and generally ‘celebrity’ annoys the heck out of me.

However, as this book covers so many different aspects of the genre and in short snippets, this would be good ‘coffee table’ reading, that I could dip in and out of!

Brilliant for any student taking a course in fashion and textiles!

Thanks for sharing and have a good week 🙂

  • At first glance, I wouldn’t have thought this is one I’d enjoy… but having read your review, I think I might like it quite a bit. I like what a broad range of topics this series encompasses.

    • I agree, this series is great, even for topics I wouldn’t have picked, but my husband was keen on, like Physics.
