Oxford University by Alice Blackford Millea

Oxford University by Alice Blackford Millea is fascinating. It has 52 stories from the archives of Oxford, which spans over 800 years. Even though the archives were established at the same time with the Bodleian, in 1634, there area documents that precede this period and they are mentioned in the book.

As imagined, the town vs gown issues are really interesting. The book is structured chronologically, which I think was the best way to do it. There are all sorts of topics covered, including some really unexpected such as: time capsule, brewing licences, and undergraduate’s car regulations.

Because of how the book is structured, it can be read a few chapters at a time, making it perfect as a bedtime read. It has lots and lots of pictures of the documents mentioned. There are also some pictures of the people who are mentioned. It’s entertaining. I loved the book and I highly recommend it.

  • I think I would like this a lot and I’ve put it on my Amazon wishlist so I won’t forget about it. They currently only offer a hardback version for $45.00. I bet in time they’ll have a Kindle version.

    • That’s quite expensive, in UK is cheaper, but the price difference might be due to importing duties or other taxes. That’s a shame.
