The Package by Sebastian Fitzek

I discovered The Package by Sebastian Fitzek on Yvonne’s blog and I wanted to read it. Taking a package for a neighbour triggers a chain of events which are, in part, very disturbing. I liked the idea, but, when I read the book, I thought there were two ideas included in a single book. Overall I enjoyed the book a lot and I gave it 4 stars, recommending it to others who like crime novels.

The Package by Sebastian Fitzek

Emma Stein is a psychiatrist and she delivers a paper to a conference in Berlin. The paper is poorly received and, after that, when she spends the night in the hotel she is raped and her head is shaven. A serial killer known as the “hairdresser” was killing women, so she thinks she is his victim too. Her husband is a detective and, on that day, he was on a work related trip. She goes back home and accepts a package for a neighbour. This leads to all sorts of misconceptions and a very complicated story.

I thought I knew who the killer/rapist is, but then the story changed and in the end I was wrong in my assumption. I think the book would have been so much better if it would have been focused on her and her husband and their friends. The neighbour and the package, as it was included in the story, made it a bit too complicated and less realistic, for me.

  • As you recall, I really enjoyed the book, although I do remember thinking that I wasn’t sure about the title, which didn’t really have an impact on the storyline until at least half way through! Like yourself, I changed my mind about the perpetrator several times and I still never really saw it coming until it was there in front of me and fully explained!! I’m pleased you thought it worth the read, I am always so nervous when someone reads a book I have recommended 🙂

    • Aww, I did enjoy it, thank you very much for writing these wonderful reviews. You made me pick books I wouldn’t have 🙂

  • It does sound a little confusing, but I’m still intrigued by what happens as a result of accepting the package for her neighbor. I’m pretty sure I put it on my wishlist when Yvonne first mentioned it. I’m currently reading another novel she recommended. 🙂
