A Song of Silence by Steve N. Lee

A Song of Silence by Steve N. Lee* is the second book I read by him. The first one was To Dream of Shadows. Both stories take place during WWII and both are inspired by real events.

Blurb for A Song of Silence by Steve N. Lee – A Gripping Holocaust Novel Inspired by a Heartbreaking True Story:
When the Nazis invade a sleepy Polish town in 1939, Mirek Kozlowski swears to keep everyone in his orphanage safe at all costs. However, despite his struggles and sacrifices, the war drags him and his children deeper and deeper into its violent nightmare.
With 89 children looking to him for hope, Mirek must do whatever it takes to protect them — no matter how criminal, distasteful, or perilous it may be.
And just when he thinks things can’t get any worse, the arrival of a sadistic SS captain brings unspeakable atrocities to his town — and surprisingly, a glimmer of hope for Mirek to save all those he cares about if only he has the courage to grasp it…
A story of love, bravery, and compassion, A Song of Silence explores history’s darkest hour and how, even in the face of overwhelming evil, one man can become a dazzling beacon of light.

I enjoyed the book very much, hence me giving it 5 stars. I think there was a bit too much and the story would have benefited from being just slightly less dense, but the book was very good. I don’t want to go into details on what I think could have been left out because of spoilers, just small things that others might find interesting.

What I loved the most about the story is the ending and I can’t talk about it without giving out spoilers. I can only say that it’s just perfect! It follows what happened in the real story and it is just emotionally beautiful and appropriate.
I liked many more things in the book, like sourcing food, working in the conditions of an occupation, what people saw as problems before having real problems, the hard choices the hero of the book had to take. I highly recommend the book because it is very interesting and the ending is superb.

About the author: Steve and his partner Ania are living in the North of England with their two cats. He likes travelling and wrote many books about lovable dogs. In a trip to Tallinn, Estonia, he discovered the real story which was the basis for his first book book. This is the second book with Holocaust at its heart. In this one he celebrates his partner’s history, as she shares the name with the heroine.
