Freezing Order by Bill Browder is a must read book, particularly at this time. Browder recounts his story of fighting to get the Magnitsky Act approved and the legal challenges as russia was trying to stop him. They used American and British lawyers to stop him, they used American, British, and European politicians for their propaganda and disinformation, they used American journalists to lie. State actors should not be able to influence so easily what is happening on sovereign soil, and we should all be aware of what is happening because we need to be able to understand the news and what our politicians are saying to us.

Browder published a book, Red Notice: A True Story of High Finance, Murder, and One Man’s Fight for Justice, in which he talked about Sergei Magnitsky, his Russian lawyer who was killed in jail because he valued the truth more than his own life.

I saw Browder give a talk a couple of months ago, at one of the Oxford colleges. He had his bodyguards with him, despite the event being for Oxford students only (all our badges were checked to allow entry into the lecture theatre). I was so impressed by his words and how he talked, so frankly and genuine. I wanted to read his books, and I started with the second one just because it was available at the local library. I will get the first book, because I want to know more about Sergei Magnitsky.

I think this book should be read because russia was involved in 2016 elections and it will be even worse next year, as they earmarked more money for their disinformation in their budget for next year (I mean, who cares that ~1 in 4 russians do not have indoor toilets, they have money for disinformation). The most shocking is, of course, how happy are lawyers to work with russians, and some journalists and some politicians. It is on us to make sure we know the truth and reading this book will definitely show some of that truth.

Since 2009, when his lawyer Sergei Magnitsky was murdered in prison after uncovering a $230 million fraud committed by Russian government officials, Browder has been leading a campaign to expose Russia’s endemic corruption and human rights abuses. Before founding Hermitage, Browder was vice president at Salomon Brothers. He holds a BA in economics from the University of Chicago and an MBA from Stanford Business School.
