Falling Fast by Jenni Fletcher

Falling Fast by Jenni Fletcher is the first Formula 1 romance book I read. I had no idea there is such a thing, despite me watching F1 for a very (very) long time. I borrowed this book from the library and read it. Of course, I was thinking that there will be issues with the F1 thing and there were. Continuing a race with 4-5 laps to go after a red flag with 3 cars taken out is not as clear cut as she made it look in the book. It was a missed opportunity to add a bit more flavour and making it look realistic. Of course, for anyone who is not remembering races with red flags, this is not an issue at all.

For a F1 fan it was not particularly difficult to see who inspired her. At the end the author wrote 3 of her favourite pilots and my assumption was correct. Not an issue, but not great either. I was a bit annoyed by the main character, a 21-year-old superfan called Ava who was apparently unsure about some “basic” stuff on F1. This is why I gave the book 4 stars.

Otherwise, it is a romance book that has a happy ending, nice characters, a somewhat realistic story. Definitely a book many who like the genre would have given 4 or 5 stars. I’m happy I read it, but I am not going to try to read another F1 romance book in the near future, I might be too annoyed about wrongly presented sport details.

  • I had no idea this was a genre (or sub-genre), but I shouldn’t be surprised. It’s not one that would appeal to me since I’m not into any kind of car racing, but I’m glad it was fun for you.

    • This kind of books surely are more appreciated by the ones who are not watching racing and are not going to be annoyed by stuff like: “there were only seconds between them”. 🙂 🙂
