Tudor Christmas Tidings by Jenni Fletcher

Tudor Christmas Tidings by Jenni Fletcher is a collection of 3 stories. I rated them individually because the quality varies so much. I’m glad I read the last one, as it was the only one worth reading of the 3. Overall a disappointing book, but I would gladly read stories or novels by Amanda McCabe.

Tudor Christmas Tidings by Jenni Fletcher

Christmas at Court by Blythe Gifford – 1 star
It is the story of Sir John Talbot and Lady Alice, who are secretly betrothed. In reality it is a fictionalized sort of historical essay in which the main characters barely make an appearance and the historical bits, for context, are taking over. I didn’t like anything about it.

Secrets of the Queen’s Lady by Jenni Fletcher – 3 stars
This is the story of Anne of Cleves’s lady-in-waiting, Lady Philippa, and younger—diplomat, Kit. The moaning about “marrying for love” in 1541 was annoying. Very few, if any, people in the upper classes would expected to marry for love in mid-1500s. It was just stupid and too long. Also, women were blamed at that time if they didn’t produce an heir or children, so it could have worked around that, saying it doesn’t matter or so, not go into modern sensibilities to say “maybe it was him”. The whole point of historical settings is to be historically accurate in the main parts. Hence the 3 stars for the book. Fletcher wrote better books, but she tends to ignore the realities of the 13th and 16th centuries for some reason.

His Mistletoe Lady by Amanda McCabe – 5 stars
The story takes place in the court of the Catholic Queen Mary Tudor, in 1554. King Philip of Spain is present and they are waiting for the birth of their child. It was like a breath of fresh air, so unusual. Queen Mary is happy and the court is merry. The love story involves Catherine Greaves, with a Spanish mother and a father imprisoned as a traitor, and Don Diego, one of Philip’s Spanish courtiers. The characters are nicely made, which is possibly because they were inspired by real people. I liked this story very much.
