The Gregs of Styal by Mary B Rose
The Gregs of Styal by Mary B Rose is a short book I read about the owners of Quarry Bank Mill, for an university assignment I’m doing. The book is interesting, but I don’t think many would be interested in it, especially as it was published in 1978 and it’s not in print any more, hence hard to get a hand on a copy.

I liked the book a lot, it is balanced and very well written, with a lot of primary sources incorporated and comparisons with other mills were included too.

It’s nice that you’re able to incorporate the mill into your school work since you’ve enjoyed visiting there several times. I’m glad you were able to find a copy of the book.

I am enjoying this kind of assignment as we can engage with a subject or a field of work that we might be interested in. It’s also so interesting to research and write, especially as I need to go to the archive, which is a bonus for a historian. 🙂
I quite enjoy these ‘coffee table’ style of books, where I can just dip in and read a few pages every so often, so it’s a shame the book is out of print…..
However, I wonder if the NT have a shop on site, where they may stock a book of similar information. I was amazed at just how much is on their web page about the mill.

There are some booklets in the shop, but they are commercial, not scholarly like this one. Of course commercial books are really good, as they offer the visitors some interesting stories and lots of wonderful pictures. There is a lot of information on the mill’s page and to visit it one needs about 4 hours. There are 3 buildings: the mill, the house where the children were (guided tour of 45 minutes), and the owner’s house. Besides, there is a beautiful garden and gift shops and tearooms. It is great for a day out, well worth visiting.
