Secrets of a Wallflower by Amanda McCabe
Secrets of a Wallflower by Amanda McCabe, first book in the Debutantes in Paris Series. I read a story by McCabe last year, part of 3 stories collection Tudor Christmas Tidings. I enjoyed her story the most, so I’ve decided to read this book by her. This, Secrets of a Wallflower, is part of a 3-book series. I gave the book 4 stars and I already reserved the next one at the library.

The blurb is incorrect, which I can’t understand why. So, it says that: “Diana Martin is thrilled to be one of the writers covering the Parisian Exposition. But her new role must be kept quiet – her parents would never allow it”. Nope, she told her parents and they were fine with her going to Paris as a reporter.
Sir William Blakely, the male character, is helping her in Paris, taking her to different places, but there is nothing to hide. The story is interesting as it is, there is no point in the lie in the blurb.
I gave the book 4 stars because the story seems a bit too complicated and a more relaxed approach would have been better. I liked the details on the Paris Exhibition of 1889, when the Eiffel Tower was constructed as a prop. McCabe is a huge fan of Paris and of the tower, so it’s all positive. Personally I don’t understand the excitement about the tower [before, during, and after seeing it]. I find there are many more interesting things in Paris, which some are mentioned in the book, albeit in passing.

About the author: Amanda wrote her first romance at the age of sixteen–a vast historical epic starring all her friends as the characters, written secretly during algebra class. Her books have been nominated for many awards, including the RITA Award, the Romantic Times BOOKReviews Reviewers’ Choice Award, the Booksellers Best, the National Readers Choice Award, and the Holt Medallion. She lives in Oklahoma with a menagerie of two cats, a Pug, and a very bossy miniature Poodle, along with far too many books.

I had that happen to me on a Lorac book… a totally incorrect blurb. I think a story set at the Paris Exhibition would be very interesting!

I think the book would have been even better with more details on the exhibition, although, in fairness, she did talk about it.
Thinking of books set during exhibitions… have you read The Devil in the White City by Erik Larson? It takes place during the Chicago World’s Fair of 1893. It’s excellent and you might enjoy it. Larson writes non-fiction that reads like fiction. I’ve only read two of his books (this one and the one about the 1900 Galveston hurricane), but I have many others on my wishlist.

Thank you for recommending it to me. I’ve put it on a wish list at the library, but it is in a library I’m not usually going to. It’s very likely it will be a couple of years before I remember to get it. 😀
