Oath and honor by Liz Cheney

Oath and honor by Liz Cheney is a memoir and also an account of the January 6th events. I was impressed by her stance during the 2024 election campaign in US. She put country over party to an extent that she endorsed and campaigned with Kamala Harris instead of supporting Trump. There are so few people with strong moral values in politics that it was amazing to see that. I was keen to read her book and I highly recommend it.

The only reason I gave the book 4 stars instead of 5 is that it is a bit bland, similar to other memoirs by American politicians. I would have liked to see a bit more of her, her feelings, instead of lists of people who attended a meeting and so on. But, as I said, this is what I’ve observed in the memoirs authored by American politicians, like Obama’s.

Only a few Republicans stood up against the plot to overturn the lawful election of 2020. She was in the Congressional Select Committee which investigated the January 6 attack. I found the book very interesting. The epilogue is stark, in which she talks about the risks electing Trump again could mean for US.

She was right, unfortunately, as Trump’s comments after he won the elections are not reassuring. Trump wants prosecutions for Speaker Nancy Pelosi, Liz Cheney, and others members of the January 6 committee, as it is reported in many newspapers. A report was made by the Republicans which singles out Cheney for retribution for her role in the committee, something that the new FBI Director supports. Trump said that the committee should go to jail because they investigated the attack. This is why is so important to read this book, both for Americans who need to know what happened, and for non-Americans, who need to look at US and consider how much trust should be placed in the country moving forward.
