Jeremy & Amy by Jeremy Keelings

Jeremy & Amy by Jeremy Keelings – The Extraordinary Story of One Man and His Orang-utan was an impulse purchase on my visit to Monkey World, while we were on holiday in Dorset. He was one of the co-founders of the sanctuary and Amy, the orang-utan, was hand reared by him. I loved this story so much, despite it being very sad. He was so open with all the things that happened in his life, some of which are very sad to read about. He is also open about mental health. Many rescuers are dealing with mental health issues due to the intense emotional toll saving others takes on them.

There was a TV show about Monkey World, but I didn’t see it. That meant that all the details were new to me. I think this would make the book even more interesting to those who have seen the TV show. I highly recommend the book to those who can’t visit the sanctuary, because his style and his openness is so refreshing and beautiful. There are some lovely black and white pictures in the book as well.

He is not trying to white wash any parts of his own past and his choices. He worked at a private menagerie, the place where Amy’s mother gave birth to her. Her mother had no maternal instincts and Jeremy hand reared her. Amy now lives at Monkey World, which opened in 1987. Today is a famous attraction with about 800,000 visitors each year.

  • I bet I would enjoy this, even if it made me sad. There is a chimpanzee sanctuary in north Louisiana that houses animals who have retired from “film acting” and other “professions”. It’s not regularly open to the public, but I think they might have one or two days a year when people can visit. I’ll have to look into it.

    • It is both really nicely written and interesting, so I think you would enjoy it. If you go to the chimp sanctuary, I hope you will share pictures from there.
