Gândurile mele din vremea războiului by Regina Maria
Gândurile mele din vremea războiului by Regina Maria is the first book in Romanian I read in over a decade. In English is My thoughts during the war by Queen Maria. She was the Queen Consort from 1914 to 1927. She was born into the British royal family.
I am very glad that I chose this book. It was an impulse purchase, when I travelled by train. There were book sellers in the train station that were enticing people with their books. I enjoyed the book very much, she was a very talented writer. I am going to share 2 quotes from the book instead of a long review, because I feel it shows better the quality of writing.

It is an immense tragedy that has been playing out for almost three years, in all corners of the world, and so astonishing is the number of those who, willingly or not, take part in it, that it seems that human faces are nothing more than shadows that float for a moment before passing, replaced by others that disappear in turn – and so, always the same, faces emerge and disappear, an uninterrupted army of heroes left nameless, because of their very number.
Famous writers and artists have written and painted these horrors, but I never expected to see with my own eyes things imagined only in the darkness of hell. I never would have thought that the life of people, sheltered by a peaceful civilisation, would be confronted with such horrifying realities. The war shattered all barriers and threw them suddenly back to the times we thought were gone forever.

What a beautiful woman she was!

She was beautiful inside and out. She was involved in the war effort, visiting hospitals (each day or so), organising the ambulance service. She fought for the Romanian territories to be given back to Romania after the war. It’s incredible how patriotic she was, considering that she was not born in RO.
