Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close by Jonathan Safran Foer
Extremely Loud and Incredibly Close by Jonathan Safran Foer is a bestselling novel. This book, which was an impulse borrow from the library is based on the book, but it is an ELT graded book, a book for the ones who learn English as a foreign language. The book was adapted by Helen Holwill. It is something new for me. The text has some illustrations, the language is simpler and more accessible. I was intrigued and it is a short book, obviously, so why not try it. I did not read his novel, but I was too curious about it to wait and try to find the novel, to read it before I read this one.
This is the second book by Jonathan Safran Foer that I read. The first one was We Are the Weather, almost six years ago. It was also interesting to read my thoughts on that book, as I’ve changed my views in some aspects.

The book was very disappointing. I took into consideration the fact that it was adapted for an audience who is learning English, so the rating is just based on the story. I did not like it at all. This is the story of Oskar Shell, a smart nine-year-old boy. His father is killed in the World Trade Center terrorist attack of 9/11. Oskar wants to learn the secret about a key that he discovers in his father’s closet. It doesn’t seem realistic, it was too complicated, and the ending surprising, but not in a good way. Maybe in the long book the ending would have been explained better, but I am not interested enough to read 300+ pages to see if it’s so. This is why I gave the book 1 star.

I didn’t realize there were books like this to help new English readers. I’m not familiar with the book it is based on. After looking it up, I don’t think it would appeal to me at all.

I think it is a great idea, which would have been very helpful many years ago. My first book in English was a regency novel and it took me days to finish it. I was reading so slow. The same book today is finished in a day.
The story is too complicated for no good reason, so I don’t think you would enjoy it.
