George IV by Kate Heard

George IV by Kate Heard (editor) is the companion catalogue for the Art & Spectacle special exhibition. I bought this beautifully illustrated hardback book that accompanies the George IV exhibition at the Queen’s Gallery at Buckingham Palace, back in January. I enjoyed the exhibition very much and I wanted to know more. The book offers lots of lovely details on George IV, both as Prince of Wales and as a monarch.

The book has 18 chapters with lots and lots of pictures and illustrations. It is a delight to see. The only downside is its weight. It is not exactly comfortable to read for a long period of time and this is why it took longer for me to finish it. I put it on a scale and it has 2kg (over 4 pounds), so that is quite a lot for a book. But, at the same time, that is my only negative comment.

In the book there are details on the houses he built, including the Royal Pavilion, the art he commissioned or collected, his very successful trips to Ireland, Scotland, and Hanover, there are details on the books he purchased as well. It is an informative and lovely book to read.

I have another book by Kate Heard, bought at the same time with this one, and another book from an exhibition, on Charles II. I will read that in the summer holiday.
