Everybody Works In Sale by Niraj Kapur

Everybody Works In Sale by Niraj Kapur, with the subtitle Here’s What You Need To Know To Achieve Success In Your Career* is part of a new book blog tour. I was excited to read the book as I’m interested in developing my selling skills, mainly because selling doesn’t came naturally to me.

Unfortunately, I could not relate with the author’s story at all. While this should not be a point in a book about selling, the personal stories were so extensive (and oversharing) that I can’t ignore them. I understand why he told them, to make a point of how he learned the things he did, that would be round up in 27 lesson-tip. The book was not boring, but it didn’t have the expected result either.

I have to admit I was annoyed a couple of time. For example, he mentions that he didn’t go to University, but the people he managed did. How is that relevant? Shouldn’t people go to University? There are many reasons why someone would chose to work in a different field, that doesn’t mean higher education is pointless. While I don’t think going to University is for everyone and it should be less pressure for young people to study if they don’t have the inclination to do so, that is hardly a reason for dismissing it.

Until the last two chapters I was pondering between giving the book 1 or 2 stars. After reading those two, I gave it a 3. Those were the kind of details I was eager to read about. One of these chapters is about corporate parties with a couple of very good tips for how to throw a successful one. The description of the bad events he attended resonated with me, as I’ve been to a few of this events.

The last chapter is about how sales have changed in the last 5 years. Again, it was an interesting chapter to read. I wish the whole book would have been written like that, it would have been a 5/5 stars for me.
