Europe Under Napoleon by Michael Broers

I read Europe Under Napoleon by Michael Broers for an essay. It is a very interesting book, written nicely, not dry at all. Of course, the subject, Napoleon, is fascinating too. I got another book of his, about Napoleon, for the essay and that one was very useful too. As I did not read it cover-to-cover, I will not review the other book.

Europe Under Napoleon by Michael Broers

In this book Broers looks at the people of Europe, especially the ones under the Napoleonic Empire, who were not French. The book contains a few maps too, which are very useful to understand the period better. The borders at that time were very volatile and it was a constant change when it comes to rulers too. He talks about how Germany, Spain, and the other countries were affected, from economic reasons and impact of warfare on the everyday life, imposition of Code Napoleon and French laws, the rise of nationalism.

    • I think you’d like better The French Revolution by Stephen Clarke and How the French Won Waterloo (or Think They Did), because those are funny and still very accurate. This one is very good, but I wouldn’t recommend it as the first book on the subject.
